The Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) is a research institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and located in the centre of The Hague. The staff of the institute consists of about 50 persons, mostly researchers. For the project ‘Demography of Declining Labour Force’ (DeLaForce) there is a vacancy for a PhD position
The goal of the DeLaForce project is to gain more insight to what extent increasing life expectancy leads to more years spent in good or bad health, and how this affects labour participation at older ages. A multistate model will be used for making scenarios of future changes in healthy life expectancy and participation. The PhD candidate will focus on estimating transition rates describing the incidence of morbidity and its interaction with mortality, level of educational attainment and labour force participation. The PhD candidate will write a dissertation based on articles to be submitted to international refereed journals.
The candidate should have:
- completed a Masters degree in (mathematical) demography, economics, or econometrics, but also candidates with a background in mathematics, physics, combined with a strong interest in modelling social processes are invited to react;
- knowledge about Markov processes, multistate modelling and duration models;
- excellent knowledge of English language;
- good writing and social skills.
Appointment and salary
The initial appointment will be PhD contract for 12 months. Upon positive evaluation the contract will be extended by another three years. The selection procedure will include a psychological assessment. The position is fulltime (38 hours per week).
The starting gross salary is € 2.083 per month and will increase to € 2.664 per month in the fourth, annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%. Applicants should have the right to work in the Netherlands for the duration of the contract.
